Finding the right wedding cake for your big day

How many Servings? - Estimate how many guests you will be feeding. You will then have an idea of how large a cake you will need.

A cake in the back? (For brides on a budget)

If you are on a tight budget, you can simply have a display cake that looks great for photos. This display cake will look good but will only have one real layer on top to cut into. Make sure you have someone assigned to the cutting and serving of the cake. Done right, no one will question it and you would've saved a lot of money.

The taste test

Some cakes look lovely, but taste terrible. Make sure your cake maker will allow you to taste your choices! Cake makers will offer different fillings and different frostings, make sure you taste them all and chose your favourite.

Experience

Beware of amateur cake makers. Make sure you can visit, chat and taste the cake, get references and a written contract.

  • Are samples available?
  • When can I arrange a tasting session?
  • When is the last day I can make any changes?
  • Do you deliver the cake, if so what are the additional costs?
  • Can I see photographs or a portfolio of your work?
  • Will I be able to easily cut the cake without making a huge mess?
  • How do I store any remaining cake after the wedding?

Advice from real brides

A piece of Cake

The one thing I will say is that you ought to assign someone to ensure that your portion of the cake is kept aside otherwise it WILL get eaten. I am a living witness!!
