Choosing the right colour palette for that important day...

Your choice in wedding colours sets the tone and ambience for the entire day. Choosing wedding colours is one of the first and trickiest tasks a bride has to cross off her to-do list.

Having specific wedding colours can help give a visual unity, as well as add a sense of elegance and thoughtfulness to your wedding day. The right colour choice can even make your wedding seem even more expensive than it really is. Choosing your wedding colours may seem a bit daunting, because of the many combinations there are, and especially if you are not visually oriented.

You can use colour in your bridesmaids' dresses, decorations, cake, flowers, accessories, table linens and even the invitations!

Choose colours you love, but also consider the following

  1. Does your venue have a neutral or strong colour palette? Choose colours that complement the setting, consider the carpeting, drapery and overall decor.
  2. Are you set on having a particular flower? (As some flowers only come in certain colours)
  3. Have you already chosen your bridesmaid dresses?
  4. What mood/feel do you want to create?
  5. What time of year will you marry? Spring and summer colours tend to be lighter- pastels etc, while autumn and winter colours are generally darker- burgundy, navy blues.

Advice from real brides

Choosing the right Colour

It was very difficult for me to decide on the colours I wanted for my wedding, so I went down to a local fabric store. There were so many beautiful colours and patterns and it helped me with new ideas. And if you make your choice while you're there, you can pick up a few yards of the fabric that matches your scheme. You can also always make bows to tie on chairs or staircases.

Bridesmaids and Colour

When picking wedding colours think about your bridesmaid dresses as well as the hall decorations. If you already know where the ceremony and reception are taking place, think about what colours are used. You have to make sure you chose colours that don't clash with those of the venue.

Colourful Invitations

Invitation cards are another aspect to consider because when your guests receive their invitation card, it will be the first clue as to what kind of wedding they'll be attending. Think about the graphic elements you'll be using on your invitation card.
