Your flowers add an extra dimension of beauty

Choosing flowers to compliment but not overpower for your venue can be a daunting task. Every bride hopes to have venue with a WOW factor, one that their wedding guests will remember, and flowers can play a large part in creating the scene you want.

Things to consider when choosing your florist

  • What is your budget?
  • Let your florist know your budget from the start, if they are good, they will give you a selection of flowers to fit into it.
  • Are you decorating the whole venue or just the tables with flowers?
  • What sort of bouquet do you want?
  • Are the grooms men wearing flowers in their button holes?

Things to consider when choosing your flowers

  • The colours of the flowers should match your chosen colour scheme.
  • Not only is colour important but the durability of the flowers is too. A wilted bouquet or headpiece the morning of your wedding spells panic attacks and near disaster. Your florist should be able to advise you what flowers stay fresh the longest.
  • The time of year your wedding is taking place. Expect the best quality and lowest prices to be for seasonal wedding flowers that are in their normal flowering season. (i.e. Tulips in spring will be a lot cheaper than tulips in winter.

The following flowers should be available all year round

  • Roses
  • Anthuriums
  • Orchids
  • Tropical flowers
  • Lilies
  • Gerberas (gerber daisies)

Many people feel that the money spent on flowers can be spent elsewhere as they can only be used for that day and some may die before the day is over. If this is the case, artificial silk flowers are always an option and can look just as good!

Advice from real brides

Artificial Bouquets

Everyone has their preference, I wasn't that picky. Fresh flowers seemed very expensive especially since I was going to throw mine. I found an affordable bunch of artificial flowers that were my exact colours!! The church I used was beautifully decorated so there was no need for flowers there and I didn't feel that my bridesmaids needed them either. The grooms men also wore artificial buttonholes.

Fresh Flowers and Bouquets

Make sure you specify when and where the flowers will be delivered if you are using fresh flowers on your wedding day. Don't forget to ask if someone from your florists will be there to assist you on the day of the wedding. A good floral designer should be there to help pin on the boutonnieres and corsages etc. Also ask if this is at an additional cost. Protect yourself by putting payments on a credit card in case there is a breach of contract.

Flowers for the venue

Ask to see previous examples of wedding bouquets, not just photos. Look at the level of attention to detail. Let your florist know your budget from the start, they can then select the flowers to fit into it. Giving your florist your colour theme, gives them an idea of what you want, preferably a photograph of your dress and your bridesmaids dresses would also help. Always request a trial run of your flowers a few weeks before the wedding, so you know exactly what you're getting - it's simple and may cost a little extra, but it is one less thing to worry about.
